Marietta Middle School Bands

The band program at Marietta Middle School has a rich history of providing a creative and educational outlet for students to grow through the study of instrumental music. The program is comprised of grades 6-8.

Incoming 6th Grade Students

Current 5th grade students in the Marietta City Schools district have the opportunity to join band when they transition to Marietta Middle School. The high school students will do a "tour" to each elementary school and demonstrate available instruments to the elementary students. In addition, these students will get to interact with current high school students and discuss the experience of joining band. This "tour" will happen during the second semester of the school year. Information about joining band will be given to students the day of the "tour", and will also be given through each elementary school.

There will be 2-3 Parent Meetings in the Spring for parents/students that want more information about joining the Marietta Band Program. Dates for these meetings will be given to students to take home on the "tour" days, and will also be distributed through each respective elementary school and the band program social media. At these meetings, parents/students will receive pertinent information about joining the band program, expectations, and how instrument selection works. It is vital that parents/students make plans to attend one of these meetings. Students cannot sign up for beginning band without having attended one of the meetings.

6th Grade Band

6th grade classes are separated into instrumental groups as follows:

  • Beginning Reeds (Clarinets, Alto Saxophones)

  • Beginning Flutes

  • Beginning Brass (Trumpets, Horns, Trombones, Tubas)

  • Beginning Percussion

7th and 8th Grade Band

Although 7th and 8th grade students have separate band classes currently, the two courses work on the same music for concert performance. Unlike the 6th grade courses, 7th and 8th grade band students are grouped into classes of all instrument types. This is to create a true performing ensemble and to develop a sense of ensemble performance skills that were not able to be developed in the 6th grade classes daily.

7th and 8th grade band students also have the opportunity to be a part of the Marietta High School "Wall of Sound" Marching Band, either as a Band Manager or a full-time member. 7th grade students may audition for respective sections during the Spring semester of their 7th grade year. In addition, any 7th or 8th grade MMS student is permitted to audition for the "Wall of Sound" Color Guard or Winter Guard. Furthermore, 7/8th grade percussionists will be able to audition for the Marietta High School Indoor Drumline program.

7/8th grade band students also participate in OMEA Solo and Ensemble, where they prepare either an instrumental solo or an ensemble performance. Students will then perform for an OMEA Adjudicator, and will receive a rating based upon that performance.

Students begin with very basic musical concepts and incorporate instruments a few weeks into the school year. They perform their first time on the MCS Bands Holiday Winter Concert, and also perform in the MMS Bands Spring Concert. This first year gives students a good foundation to build upon in later years. Classes meet on an Even/Odd day schedule.
